Trivia[]

  • White bones are a reference to Baigujing (白骨精), the White Bone Spirit, from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en. Her true form is a skeleton and she inhabites the White Bone Cave. In order to become immortal, she tries to capture Tang Sanzang, a monk traveling to India for Buddhist texts. It is believed that consuming his meat would fulfill this purpose. The White Bone Spirit transforms herself into a young woman to lure him to her lair. However, Sun Wukong, the monk’s first disciple, able to see through her disguise, kills the body. The White Bone Spirit then transforms herself into the elderly mother and the elderly father, but Wukong recognizes her every time and ultimately defeats her for good. The monk, who believes that his disciple has just wiped out an entire innocent family, disowns him. Tang Sanzang is left vulnerable with two disciples, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, who are less adept at thwarting demons.
